Aidan Quinn
Nigel Hawthorne

Synopsis:

In 1871, ace reporter Henry Stanley (Quinn) was persuaded by his publisher that a mission to an unexplored part of Africa to search for the missing English missionary David Livingstone (Nigel Hawthorne) would be a terrific publicity stunt. Against the spectacular and strange scenery of Kenya's Masai reserve and the island of Lemu, off the African coast, Stanley is beset by fierce animals, inhospitable tribesmen and a host of inner demons before finding his man, and perhaps, himself.

Hawthorne's character:

Hawthorne's Dr. Livingstone is a warm, intelligent and sweet old man. He has witnessed a massacre of Africans and is obsessed that truth must be told and that the unjust behaviour against blacks must be stopped. He greets Stanley with warmth and curiosity and is a paternal figure for this young disturbed man, whose whole life has been a lie.
